This verse isn't promoting slavery in any way though. Slavery was considered normal in the ancient world. This verse merely gives guidance to those who were unfortunate enough to be enslaved. In fact, the Biblical idea that all people are created in the image of God is what eventually lead to the abolishment of slavery. How is it ridiculous? A slave is being beaten by his master for no reason, the Slave could fight back, but by doing so he is no better than his master. Peter told slave to endure it because they will be rewarded by God in the end.
