Traditional Latin mass, Roman Latin rite 1962 misal honoring “Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary” August 15 2026 in Philadelphia. ⚜️ THE ASSUMPTION OF THE HOLY VIRGIN MARY The solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, as it appears in the Roman Mass, is the luminous result of a Marian faith that the Church has guarded, meditated on, and progressively deepened throughout the centuries. However, one should not think that the dogma was suddenly born on November 1, 1950: the solemn definition of Pius XII represents rather the crowning of a long and venerable liturgical and patristic tradition, in which the Church has increasingly clearly contended with the Holy Virgin as the fulfillment of Christ's victory over sin and death. The Holy Scripture does not directly narrate the end of Mary's earthly life, nor does it describe her Assumption; however, the Church, since the early centuries, has contended the singular dignity of the Mother of God and her intimate union with the Son. The Holy See, in the Munificentimus Deus, on November 1, 1950, pronounced the solemn definition. With the Constitution apostolic Munificentimus Deus, on November 1, 1950, Pio XII defined as a divinely revealed dogma «that the always-virgin Mary, the Mother of God, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed into heavenly glory in soul and body». It is significant, and theologically very delicate, that the Pope used the expression "terminus vitae" (the end of the earthly course), without defining whether Mary must necessarily die in the common sense of the word. Thus, the definition leaves intact that venerable mystery which the Eastern tradition expresses with the name of Dormitio Virginis, while it defines with absolute clarity what belongs to the Catholic faith: the heavenly glorification of Mary in soul and body. The Assumption is therefore, in the spirit of the Catholic tradition, the most luminous sign of the supernatural destination of man; and the Blessed Virgin, already glorified in soul and body, appears as the most perfect image of the Church and as the consolation of the Christian people on earth. Thus, the dogma proclaimed by Pius XII in 1950 does not represent the invention of a new truth, but the solemn definition of a faith that, through the prayer of the Church, the liturgy, preaching, theology, and devotion of the faithful, was matured and became increasingly explicit over the centuries. And at the heart of this long story remains the splendid insight of Dormitio Virginis: Mary, the Mother of the Lord, after having completed her earthly pilgrimage, falls asleep in the peace of God and, by the special grace of her Son, is awakened to glory, not only in the soul, but also in the body. In her, the Church already sees the fulfillment of the promise of the Resurrection and, looking at the Queen assumed to heaven, renews its hope in the final victory of Christ over death. ⚜️I thought I’d share with all you, this beautiful procession to conclude this beautiful mass.
