She spent her last ten minutes boiling water to throw at the hijackers in Flight 93. She was k*lled fighting back on 9/11. Her name was Sandy Waugh Bradshaw. She was 38. She'd wanted to be a flight attendant her whole life. After eleven years with United Airlines, she'd cut back to just two trips a month, so she could be home more with her two toddlers, her teenage stepdaughter, and her husband, a pilot for US Airways. On September 11, 2001, she was working United Flight 93. When hijackers took the plane, Bradshaw first called United Airlines directly to report the emergency. Then she called home to Greensboro, North Carolina. She told her husband she'd slipped into the galley and was filling pitchers with boiling water, working alongside other crew and passengers preparing to fight back. As the call ended, she told him everyone was running toward first class. "I've got to go," she said. "Bye." At 9:57 a.m., the passengers and crew of Flight 93 began their counterattack. At 10:03 a.m., the plane crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, believed to be minutes from its intended target: the U.S. Capitol. Sandy Bradshaw was k*lled along with everyone else aboard. Twenty years later, a sheriff's office in North Carolina put her name on its patrol cars, just so a new generation driving past would ask who she was. Sandy Bradshaw spent her last minutes turning hot water into the only weapon she had. She never got the chance to use it.
