@jacksonsnmjourney: Dear Delta Airlines at the MSP airport, First, I’d like to say. I am NOT a person to bash any . Not even a company and especially not publicly. But this. THIS is important. Not only is it important to me and my family, but for future families of children with any disability. We’ve had a long day of travel. We’re at 16 hours with 2 kids. 7 hour plane delay for maintenance + this particular flight was also delayed a bit. Jackson, age 3 who has ACTA-1 related Nemaline Myopathy. He is physically disabled. He just took his first steps a month ago (we’re so proud) - can’t walk for long and fatigues fast. Gtube fed, and many other underlying conditions. Multiple surgeries, many extra needs, makes traveling a bit harder but we utilize pre-boarding for those with disabilities and it has always helped our family. We also travel with a 1 year old lap child- Jackson’s little brother, Will. I noticed right when we got to the gate and before we were pre-boarding that the attendant helping people was cranky. Not kind and mean to multiple other passengers. I actually told my husband this before we even had an interaction with her. We went to pre-board as usual when they call for disabilities or those who need extra time (we have never in 3 years had issues with any airline) This woman immediately stopped us and said pre-boarding for disabilities was not for kids. We said Jackson was disabled with a muscular disease and we’ve never been denied because he is the physically disabled. She said loud and firmly “ONLY FOR WHEELCHAIRS” (which to me, inferred that you had to have a wheelchair to qualify for extra boarding time) when I said we board with disabilities due to his muscle disease and always have since we started flying with him without issue. Where I told her I have never been told that, tried to explain about his condition and she interrupted loudly “ONLY for wheelchairs!” While she pointed us to the back of the line and repeated herself over and over as I was trying to explain. I turned around FURIOUS and told John “She is a b****” and made sure she heard it. NOT my proudest moment. I’ve never been denied and told that my son’s disabilities didn’t qualify because he wasn’t in a wheelchair. This is when she told me if I said it again she’d throw me off the plane. So, I didn’t speak. I immediately went to the attendant next to her who informed me he was the supervisor on the floor. Initially, he was rude and backing her up until I told them how absolutely wrong this was, my son shouldn’t be denied, our family shouldn’t be denied just because he was not in a wheelchair. Then the profuse apologize on his end came. This was a “miscommunication” he said. He let us on immediately (but there was an issue with our lap child and we ended up being the last ones on)- this was not in their control and the guy fixed it. It just took a while. Not a miscommunication. A woman who looked at my son, didn’t see a disability (some are obvious but not unless you actually look) so denied us. Did not listen to us. I could not explain. She was yelling at me and telling me to go so she could board everyone else. It was a big scene, everyone was watching, helping us get out of the way of others boarding. A fellow mom came up to me just to tell me she would have done the same thing if that was done to her and her child and family. It was humiliating to be yelled at by this employee. We were told it was against their policy to give her name. And told there was no one else we could speak to about the matter. We did in fact get both of their names. As a father, and a pilot, who always is cheering Jackson on while I’m on trips, this has me furious. I can guarantee if she had said something to the captain, he would have made sure it was rectified. That’s why she didn’t bother to do it. Gate agents act like they have the authority to do whatever they want. It’s ridiculous.

Calling her a B was probably the kindest thing any mother could have done if in your shoes at that moment. Don’t feel bad.

I was on a @deltaflight at JFK Friday night. I just had back surgery. I needed a wheelchair. The person staffing check in at the disability desk was on break so they sent me to the main check in desk. I couldn’t lift my two heavy suitcases onto the scale and when I told the woman I needed help she told me I had to put them on the scale myself. She said “it ain’t my job to lift your bags”. I didn’t want her to lose my bags on purpose bc honestly she looked miserable so I asked her to call someone for help. She refused. She A very nice man on the line came over to help me. I’m on a trip now but I have every intention of writing to delta when I’m home. I’m sure no one will respond. Do better, Delta.

We ride a dawn or whenever you tell us too. You advocate because he can’t…that’s your job. File an ADA violation against her specifically.

What gets me? Is there's so many people who misuse the wheelchairs, and they never get questioned or asked.

Please submit a full complaint IMMEDIATELY. I exclusively fly Delta and while I’ve never had this experience, I have had them mess up really badly and they rectified the situation. Be firm, have all your flight information, and Gate Agent names. I have NEVER seen families with small children denied. I’ve also never heard of a “wheelchair only” policy for “those who need a little extra time to board”. Do not let this go.

As somebody who works for an airline, I have never denied anybody stepping up when I've called for those wanting to board early! Not all disabilities are physical, who am I to make that decision? If you need extra time or assistance, I will never deny you early boarding. So sorry to hear Jackson went through that, and you too! He's just the best little buddy ever! You got this Jackson

@AmericanDisabilityActionGroup Take a look at this. This wonderful family has a wonderful child with a disability but because he's not full time in a wheelchair, so he's not "disabled enough" for early boarding. He can walk but for right now it's only a few steps at a time (for now, hes practicing and getting stronger). We should all tag different disability advocacy groups about this. The woman that worked at the airport must have not known that he's a celebrity too on top of it. ❤️
