@caitofalltraits: It’s a tough topic because differences can sometimes be seen as challenging rather than conversation starters and growing up in Singapore, I also absolutely understand why… #singapore
this is a beautiful watch. point after point just hit home. and when you brought up 'sonder' it totally sold me. the word 'sonder' holds such a special place in my heart, having done a concert with a storyline surrounding this. thank you so much for this, really appreciate it so much

but some people find these questions too intrusive for them to share with you, so by anticipating that, you stop asking such questions. so the conversations just stay shallow.

I think we’re collectively traumatised by the experience of being yelled at by the hawker stall owner for stuttering our order and being too slow to get to the point 😂

part of the problem with starting a conversation also comes from our upbringing. As a child, we are always told to be quiet and not ask questions (because it's rude). So as an adult, we don't have the practice to ask the "right" questions. It took me a long time to finally break the psychological barrier to start a conversation and ask questions. 👍✌️

We all need to feel sonder, it’s very humbling to feel we are just a tiny role in someone else’s life, but sadly most Singaporeans are very self absorbed

its sad that most people today think they need to either get something from you or give something to you whenever you interact with them

I couldn’t agree more. I actually had the same conversation just yesterday. Growing up in Singapore, we’ve always taken pride in being efficient — even in the way we communicate, and maybe that’s why Singlish is so direct too 😂
What I’ve noticed in some other cultures is that conversations often start with the person first, before getting to the task. That difference really made me reflect on how we connect with people.

But it’s okay, when you’re young, make your money here where it’s efficient and move far far away to retire 😉

when I was still working for an airline that caters to Singaporeans as well, I don't think they're bad at conversations. I think as with other races, there are some if not all are really bad but there's that percentage who is really friendly.

In this modern world, ppl dont need another ppl to solve their probs. They turned to AI or socmed for the answers. Hence no purpose of making new connection u less its transactional.

Singaporeans have been brought up with performance as the measure. it leads to Dwecks fixed mindset. if only we'd embrace adventure we'd move to a growth mindset n truly live
