I want to explain the situation I was put in last night, because I really don’t feel good about it. This happened on a Saturday night. The wildlife rehabilitator we called did not answer, and Animal Services was already on the way. And I also want people to understand that calling local wildlife rehabilitators isn’t always as simple for us as it may sound. A while back, a text message was circulated among local wildlife rehabilitators — I personally saw the text message — saying that rehabbers would be blacklisted if they helped me and my wife out. I’m not sharing that to start drama or attack anyone. I’m sharing it because it’s an important part of understanding the position we were in Saturday night. Also weeks ago i was made aware that legally, I can help rescue an injured wild animal and transport it to the proper permitted wildlife rehabilitator or Animal Services. What I cannot legally do is transport that animal back to our sanctuary and care for it ourselves because we do not currently have the permit required to rehabilitate Texas wildlife. We were likely going to have to temporarily bring this beaver back to our ranch until we could find a permitted place willing and able to take him. But once Animal Services was involved, I knew I couldn’t just say, “Never mind, we’ll handle it,” because that could look like we were knowingly taking possession of wildlife we aren’t permitted to rehabilitate We are trying our absolute best to do things the right way and within the law even though it doesn’t make sense. In Texas, a person with the appropriate hunting license can recreationally kill beavers year-round. There is no recreational bag limit. A nuisance beaver causing property or agricultural damage can legally be taken without a hunting license. So theoretically, someone could legally kill all the beavers … But try to save ONE, and suddenly it’s much different. Someone please explain to me how that makes sense. And I also want people to understand something else about wildlife rehabilitation. From what I have learned through taking the TEXAS Wildlife Rehabilitator’s exam is that if an animal cannot be released at 100% of its capabilities,

call wildlife rehabilitation center, not animal services. I called animal services for a injured deer in my yard and they came and shot and killed it and left. they said I had to dispose of it. it was a horrible experience.

BC it's had human contact we have to kill it? What kind of shit is THAT? 😡 People rehabilitate animals ALL THE TIME and they go back into the wild. This infuriates me! All I heard was, we kill EVERYTHING that comes in the door

Everybody understand this, please. If you call the city in any way whatsoever for any animal, they are going to kill the animal. They’re not even going to spend the money to test that beaver to see if it has rabies. They are going to kill it. What you need to do is you need to Google and search for Beaver rescues in my area. You will be so surprised how many different rescues for all these different animals there are in every state. That’s the only way you can get help for an animal. Search rescue.!

I've called animal services twice and twice they have been a disappointment. You are better off taking the animals to a private vet, because the first word that always comes out of animal services is euthanasia. They euthanize for a living, lost cats, lost dogs or whatever poor soul they get their hands on, if there is not s quick claim, they send perfectly healthy animals to the other side real quick. Careful with Animal Disservice.

Thats another thing that I had no clue was going on. I thought there would be special needs Wildlife sanctuaries everywhere… but that’s not the case. I understand that there are situations where euthanasia is necessary. If an animal is suffering and there is no reasonable chance for recovery or quality of life, humane euthanasia can absolutely be an act of kindness. But being unable to return to 100% of what an animal once was does not automatically mean, in my opinion, that it has to be killed. The more animals I help, the more I see that things are not always what I thought they were. When someone is willing and capable of helping an animal, I believe our system should make it easier for capable people to help — not make people afraid to help. I have reached out and have been told that I’m going to receive a call back from Animal Services regarding this Todd the Beaver because I want to make absolutely sure that he is not euthanized unnecessarily. They are aware multiple Permitted Wildlife Rehabbers have reached out to me willing to help. I will keep you posted when I know more

Maybe he didn't realize AC would only euthanize. He came out with a net, got it & got it out of the water, so clearly he was trying to help the beaver. Sometimes you have to wait for wildlife rehabs to contact you back after reaching out. Please stop crucifying this man. Good grief!
