7 Types of Rest You Might Be Missing Feeling exhausted doesn’t always mean you need more sleep. Sleep is one of the most important forms of rest, but it isn’t the only way we recover. Sometimes you can sleep a reasonable amount and still feel depleted because another kind of rest has been missing. Physical rest: Giving your body time to recover through sleep, slowing down, gentle movement, or simply doing less. Mental rest: Giving your brain a break from constant planning, worrying, problem-solving, decision-making, and information. Emotional rest: Having space to feel what you’re feeling without needing to hide it, fix it, or hold everything together. Social rest: Spending time with people who feel supportive and easy to be around, while also giving yourself permission to step back when you need space. Sensory rest: Reducing some of the constant input from screens, notifications, noise, bright lights, conversations, and stimulation. Creative rest: Making room for curiosity, beauty and enjoyment without needing everything you do to be productive. This might be music, art, reading, cooking, nature, or something else you enjoy. Spiritual rest: Reconnecting with meaning, values, community, faith, purpose, or whatever helps you feel connected to something beyond your daily responsibilities. This is especially important if you struggle with sleep. Sometimes we start expecting sleep to carry the entire burden of making us feel rested. Then when we’re tired, we assume something must be wrong with our sleep and start trying even harder to improve it. Sleep matters. But so does how we spend the rest of our day. So instead of only asking, “How can I sleep better?” It might also be worth asking: “What kind of rest have I been missing lately?” Save this and come back to it when you’re feeling depleted. Follow @quadrawellness for practical, evidence-informed strategies for sleep, insomnia and rest. I’m Tony Ho, MSW, RSW, an insomnia therapist helping people with chronic insomnia sleep without trying harder. Which type of rest do you need most right now? Which can you give yourself even if sleep doesn’t happen? #SleepTips #Rest #MentalHealth
