@simonakeroydgardener: Sycamore trees! Despised by many for centuries for being an invasive non-native. Accused of crowding out native species, particularly in woodlands. Many have been felled and thinned out to make way for other woodland trees. Sycamores probably came to the UK in the 15th or 16th century. Sycamores (Acer pseudoplatanus) are now naturalised in UK and support wildlife….and importantly providing shade. Whilst other trees in our landscape struggle, sycamore seems to be thriving and greening up our very yellow and parched countryside. Are sycamores the future? A non-native! A foreign invader! And whilst our native trees (ash, oak, beech, birch, elm etc) struggle with adapting to climate change and diseases such as ash die back, oak processionary moth, and the shallow roots of beech trees struggling in the chalky soils of the north downs due to climate change, sycamores are thriving in the UK. Sycamores are the trees pumping oxygen and fresh air into our country. To be fair, ecology and conservation is far more complicated and nuanced than simply saying yay or nay to a dominant species of tree. There will of course be sensitive, environmental areas of landscape where sycamores would smother out important, specific species and destroy sensitive habitats. But sycamores are an interesting point of discussion in terms of future proofing the countryside. What trees will we have in 100 years time? The climate is changing and with it, we need trees that can cope with hotter drier conditions in summer and a wetter, windier climate in winter. Our current native trees aren’t coping. We need a new influx of trees if the planet and humans are to survive. Sycamore or Syca…less? Love it or loathe it? Which side of the fence or Hadrians wall do you stand? I know I'm gonna get hate for this but here goes, I never really understood all the fuss over the sycamore that was cut down. look, I love trees, I spend as much time as possible I the woods, and I breaks my heart when trees are needlesly cut down, especially I ancient woodland. But sycamore are So fucking prolific! Trust me. they will and do grow anywhere. Now, if it was an old oak that was chopped down, well that's a different matter.

We’ve got loads on the farm, the birds love them, our garden is a wildlife haven that is never touched, they seed themselves and I don’t consider them a nuisance. We’ve had loads of butterflies this year too!

I dont mind the sycamores, it’s fascinating to see them sprout up out of nowhere! It’s the laurel I have to cut down, seeing them strangle the other trees.

As much as I love all trees , wether native or not, the Sycamore is such a ‘weed’ , it self seeds everywhere. I’m in Scotland and not got a problem with lack of rain … I’m a “Sycaless” I’m afraid. I have too many surrounding me, ( I’m rural) and the seedling are bothersome.
