Hilot is my Medicine 💚 Hilot is the traditional folk healing practice of the Philippines and the traditional healers are called “manghihilot” and “arbularyo”. Hilot energy balancing practice through manual therapy. Their role is to balance the energy of the individual and to harmonize their relationship with the natural world. Methods of a Filipino traditional folk healer would use are tawas (divination diagnostic), hilot masahe (manual therapy), orasyon (prayer), lana (oil) and halamang gamot (herbal remedies). Because there are thousands of islands in the Philippines, every folk healing practice is going to vary based on apprenticeship from an elder, familial knowledge and their relationship with the spirits. Hilot feels like returning back to the comfort of your childhood home. I find comfort in this practice when I’m serving my family, friends & community because it’s the medicine of my ancestors working through my hands. When I practice hilot, I am preserving ancestral healing knowledge and honoring cultural customs in this practice. Back in the motherland, our traditional healers are the manghihilot and arbularyo. One deals with the physical and the other the energetic-spiritual with the practice of hilot. Some say one works from the physical to the spiritual and the other from the spiritual to the physical. I do not claim these titles or even the ordained title I received, but rather just a student/practioner of traditional Filipino medicine. I’ll forever be a student of this healing practice. To be called these traditional roles you either have to undergo years of apprenticeship from an elder or your community recognizes you. To my fellow kapatid in the diaspora ask your family what they know about hilot or what is it called in their language. Perhaps what you thought was “massage” or masahe on the living room floor for your elders was actually hilot without the training of an elder. Familial knowledge is very precious. #hilot #filipinomedicine #manghihilot #arbularyo #ancestralmedicine #ancestralhealing
