Perfectly said Robert. In addition to the Democratic Party pressuring Alani Bankhead to drop out in Montana, there are actually 3 other states (NE, ID & SD) where the Democratic party encouraged democratic nominees to drop out of national elections to help the Independent candidate win races for which there is a high probability the democrats will lose. When this method, which unfairly tosses aside the vote of everyone who voted democratic & all the hard work that went into the candidate winning the Democratic primary, was employed in the past, it did not work & the Independent lost. This disenfranchment of democratic voters by their own party will do more to suppress democratic turnout than any MAGA threats of ICE and law enforcement at the polls ever could. If a voter feels like the political party of his/her choice doesn't value his/her vote, he/she will either abandon the party or just stop showing up to vote which will further lower the chance of democratic wins.
Democratic Senate nominees in Nebraska & Idaho dropped out as a result of the pressure. Alani Bankhead, the nominee in MT, who refused to drop out & Julian Beaudion, the democratic nominee in SD, who suspended his campaign for personal reasons, not to help the independent, both disagree with this strategy. I agree with both & the reasons for their disagreement.
In MT, some national Democratic groups backed independent Seth Bodnar, the leader of the University of Montana system, but Democrat Alani Bankhead, an Air Force veteran and a first-time political candidate, refused to drop out, saying the strategy of running independents is a bad idea that hurts Democrats in the long term.
Bankhead's & Beaudion's statements communicate exactly how I feel about this:
“If you want to rehabilitate the brand, then you do it by rehabilitating the brand, not supporting independents,” Bankhead said in an interview. Undermining the voters’ will by asking the Democratic nominee to withdraw is “highly inappropriate” and further upsets voters, she said.
Julian Beaudion, said in an interview before exiting the race that asking Democrats to drop out “hurts state and local parties more than it does the national brand".
