Understanding storms is something every sailor should know⛵️🌊⛈️ But today, we’re going to talk about how to navigate storms WITHOUT tech. So put the app down, you won’t need your electronic forecast tools for this 🤙 Step 1. Where is the storm center? & where is it heading next? Using buy ballots law - if we face the wind and put out our right arm (northern hemisphere), then pull it back 15° we will be pointing at the center of the low pressure system. In the southern hemisphere use your left arm, or turn your back to the wind. 🌏 We can track the storms movement like this. 2. Warning signals By watching for wind shifts and a corresponding drop in barometric pressure we can gauge the strength of the system and where we expect to intercept it. 3. The safe vs dangerous side: All weather systems (except stationary fronts) move. So the side of the system where the wind direction and the system itself are going the same way is called the dangerous side ❌⛈️ because the effect will increase the strength and severity of the conditions. The opposite side, where the systems movement and its wind direction are opposite is called the safe side.. because the two forces cancel each other out (somewhat 😂). In any case, if your boat⛵️ is not fast enough to avoid the storm completely, at least know which side of the system will be more manageable. Let me know any questions you’ve got down below! And please note: I’m not a meteorologist, if anyone wants to carry on this topic on more depth, please free 🙏
