leouwf36 :
i love the core values of islam and genuinely adore its essence.
however i struggle with the fact that women and men are not given the same rights under traditional islamic law. you can argue it's equity rather than equality, but then on what grounds? what is the actual principle behind each difference? why should a man have sexual access to female captives when a woman isn't given an equivalent right? why should testimony, inheritance, marital rights, parental rights, sexual obligations, divorce, etc. differ based on sex? if these differences are supposed to be just, then why is one sex given certain rights or authority that the other isn't?
.
and quran 4:34 is another example. it's traditionally understood to allow a husband, as a final step of discipline, to physically strike his wife under certain restrictions. i know daraba is disputed and some muslims interpret it differently, but the traditional interpretation is still striking. and even if you interpret it differently, the bigger question is still there:
why does the husband have a disciplinary authority over his wife that she doesn't equally have over him? that's something i genuinely struggle to reconcile with justice, equality, and the idea of fighting oppression, you get me?
