In 2014, astronomers announced a discovery that changed our understanding of ring systems: a small icy world called 10199 Chariklo has its own rings. It was the first known small Solar System body, other than a giant planet, found to have a ring system. 🔭 The rings were discovered when Chariklo passed in front of a distant star in 2013. Astronomers measured brief drops in the star’s brightness before and after the main occultation. These additional dips revealed two narrow rings surrounding Chariklo. 💍 The two rings are remarkably narrow and dense. Their estimated widths are about 4.3 miles and 1.9 miles. They orbit roughly 249 miles from Chariklo’s center and are separated by a small gap. The rings are thought to contain predominantly icy material. 🌌 Chariklo is a Centaur—a population of small bodies with unstable orbits in the outer Solar System, generally between the orbits of the giant planets. At roughly 155 miles across, Chariklo is tiny compared with Saturn or Uranus, making the discovery of its rings particularly surprising. 🔭 The rings were observed again using NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope in 2023. JWST observed the system during another stellar occultation and detected the characteristic effects produced by Chariklo and its rings. 🧊 Chariklo’s rings are also unusual because they are confined into narrow bands rather than forming a broad, diffuse disk. Their existence has raised questions about how such small bodies can retain organized ring systems and what processes keep the rings so sharply defined. 🌠 Chariklo is not the only small body now known to have rings. The discovery prompted astronomers to look more closely at other distant minor planets and Centaurs, revealing that ring systems may occur beyond the giant planets and may be more diverse than previously thought.
