When your horse comes running down the paddock to show you per piaffe 😭💛 it melts my heart every time- especially because it’s Nina. You all know Nina as a bit of a fire-cracker 😂 full of spunk and energy! But if you know her personality and history, the fact that she has that reputation is nothing short of extraordinary. Nina is an extremely energy-conservative horse. In the traditional circles, she would quickly be labelled as lazy, stubborn or a “moody mare”. Nina is also extremely introverted. This means that she is much more prone to shutting down and dissociating as soon as she feels pressured, overwhelmed or stressed. Back in the day when I worked mainly with pressure and release, I was often in a state of frustration with her. I didn’t understand why everything seemed like so much effort for her… most of the time, she acted like her hooves were made of lead. But she wasn’t being lazy or stubborn, she was genuinely struggling and trying to cope with what was asked of her. Yes, she technically did everything I asked, but it was like she was always trying to use the least amount of energy possible, and she was always waiting for the opportunity to stop and stand still. Now she is a massive over-achiever and it makes my heart soar for her. But this is such a massive transformation for her. The turning point was giving her true choice within training. Allowing her to say no whenever she didn’t feel comfortable. And when she knew that she could say no, she did… a lot 😂 but that challenged me to set up the training in a way where she would WANT to say yes!! And when we unlocked that, she started saying yes louder than ever!
