@altinyoiz: The Byzantine Empire, also known as the Eastern Roman Empire, was the continuation of the Roman Empire in the eastern Mediterranean. Its capital was Constantinople, one of the richest and most important cities of the medieval world. The Byzantines considered themselves Romans, and their empire lasted for more than a thousand years. The Byzantine Empire reached one of its greatest peaks under Emperor Justinian I (527–565 AD). During his reign, Byzantine armies reconquered parts of North Africa, Italy, and southern Spain. Justinian also ordered the construction of the Hagia Sophia and the compilation of Roman laws. He is often considered one of the most powerful Byzantine emperors, although Heraclius was also an exceptionally important ruler. The Byzantines and the Sasanian Empire were the two major superpowers of the ancient Near East and fought each other for about four centuries. Their wars were mainly over Mesopotamia, Armenia, the Caucasus, Syria, and Anatolia. The greatest war took place from 602 to 628 AD. The Sasanians initially captured Syria, Palestine, and Egypt and came close to Constantinople, but Emperor Heraclius launched a successful counterattack and defeated them. These wars severely weakened both empires. Soon afterward, the Arab-Muslim conquests began. The Sasanian Empire was eventually destroyed, and the last Sasanian king, Yazdegerd III, was killed in 651 AD. Byzantium survived much longer, although it lost many territories to Muslim powers. It was later weakened by the Seljuks and especially by the Fourth Crusade, which captured Constantinople in 1204. The Byzantines recovered the city in 1261, but never regained their former strength. Finally, the Ottoman Empire, under Sultan Mehmed II, besieged Constantinople in 1453. On May 29, 1453, the city fell, and the last Byzantine emperor, Constantine XI, died during the battle.
