One of the worst pieces of public speaking advice I’ve ever gotten is that the more you do it, the easier it gets. Watching the new press secretary’s her first press briefing made me feel for her (only a little bit), because I recognized many of the physical symptoms of anxiety that I used to experience myself. The weird pauses. Feeling like you can’t catch your breath. Feeling like your brain has completely stopped working while staring at a page full of words. Public speaking was something I always DREADED in school. My family, professors and friends would tell me, “Don’t worry! Just practice more, and you’ll get better!” But no matter how much I practiced, it never got easier. In fact, it made my mental health worse because I started to feel like something was fundamentally wrong with me. And then I learned about beta blockers (NOT AN AD). Obviously, you should talk to your doctor about whether medication is appropriate for you, but for me, beta blockers genuinely changed my life. I still get nervous prior to speaking but now, I can manage my physical symptoms, say what’s on my mind with confidence, and actually enjoy the experience. My job now involves LOTS of public speaking, and I’m so glad I’m not missing out on it because of my anxiety. Now, I’m not going to pretend I know what’s going on with the new press secretary, but if public speaking anxiety is something she struggles with, I hope she knows there are options beyond just telling herself to get better at it. That being said, being the White House press secretary is a high-profile communications job, and there is no question that she is massively unqualified. So my advice would be to A) give the job to a more qualified communications professional or B) get a public speaking coaching (and possibly some beta blockers). #publicspeaking #publicspeakingtips
