i gave 200 of prop instead of 20 ): immediately called out for a neo stick, reported it, debriefed with the doc, told management and called the pharmacy.

Ok ladies, I’m a CRNA. I think you mean mg not mL’s….200mL’s is 2000mg’s. The usual dose to induce general anesthesia is 1-2mg/kg which for most people is 150-200mg (15-20mL) 😅

Why are nurses push dosing propofol. I've never seen this done unless we are talking about setting the drip rate too high

Propofol is a general anesthetic and hospitals have very strict guidelines as to who can push it…whether people working there know this or not is another topic

How did they do that? That would be two huge syringes. There is not a 100 ml syringe at our facility.

We bolus 20 max at a time in the ICU for adults and 70/30 it’ll tank their pressure. 80 for a kid is wild af.

I think you mean mg not ml. I have never seen a 100ml syringe. Propofol is a dangerous drug when not given by professionals who are constantly monitoring vitals and resp status, like anesthesia providers or doctors not engaged in other parts of patient care. Even with an 80 mg dose for a 2 year old, proper airway and hemodynamic management can prevent adverse outcomes

Do regular nurses administer propofol? If so, that is not acceptable! You need specialized training to use a drug like that—either in anesthesia or intensive care nursing‼️

Thankfully it’s short acting but you better have the skill to manage the airway until it wears off

I’m also very confused by you saying propofol is for conscious sedation. If propofol is needed, you’ve passed conscious sedation and entered the need for anesthesia with a MAC or general anesthetic with natural airway. Fentanyl and Versed are the conscious sedation drugs typically used. Propofol is going to take make anybody apneic, even in doses as low as 10mg (1mL).
