The film is set during World War II, when the Germans were in Italy. Her husband was away fighting in the army, and she was left alone in her village. She struggled to make ends meet and gave her body to the German soldiers in exchange for money or other necessities. The other women in the village were already jealous of her, and when the war ended, they did this to her and to other women who had often been with the Germans: they shaved their heads and abused and humiliated them.
