one of the best ways to make a villain is for them to have a genuine friendship with the hero. they constantly suspect each other but don't want to out the other incase they are wrong about their suspicions. when it comes down to the battle both sides will be torn about fighting each other. at which point either other people step in or a third party gets involved

Oh I did above and beyond. He changed his story. HE followed it down to the letter. All because he knew he couldn't win. But he'd learn through them. As you read what he can't see, he reads you and learns through it. Not how he wanted it, but he gets what he wanted. and nobody can stop him because nobody knows.

honestly it makes sense. if you want the villain to be hidden for some big reveal you want it to be someone you'd see a lot but someone you wouldn't expect to be evil or bad.

Mine was a plot twist Maiden squad always saved Persues when he was going to get killed by Medusa but it was later revealed to him that Medusa was created by maiden and that Persues himself was an experiment they needed to make Medusa stronger
