When hungry people are told that suffering proves their faith, when workers are told obedience is holiness, when citizens are taught to pray instead of demanding functioning institutions, when corruption is answered with “God will judge them,” and when exploitation is endured because heaven will supposedly compensate us later, somebody on earth is getting very comfortable with our patience. This is one of the most dangerous legacies of colonial-era religious control: not faith itself, but the weaponization of faith to produce obedience, passivity and psychological surrender. And the tragedy is that the tactic no longer even requires a foreign missionary. Across Africa today, we often reproduce it ourselves. Politicians loot while citizens hold prayer vigils, prosperity preachers promise miracles while congregations remain trapped in poverty, failed governments hide behind religion, and people are taught to spiritualize problems that require policy, organization, education, industry and accountability. The costume has changed, but the mechanism is painfully familiar: keep the people looking upward long enough and they may stop asking who is taking everything around them.
