Most people know Madeira Airport for its spectacular runway. This 1,020-metre runway extension, supported by 180 concrete pillars, holds a Guinness World Record for the longest bridge-supported runway extension in the world. But few people know what’s hidden underneath it. In 2006, a recreational waterfront area was developed here around Porto de Recreio de Santa Cruz, including a small harbour with around 40 berths, spaces for leisure and water activities, a promenade and access to the ocean. Then, during the night of 10–11 December 2013, a powerful storm hit Santa Cruz. The area was severely damaged, including parts of the harbour and surrounding infrastructure. There were several attempts to restore it. In 2015, the recreational harbour reopened after repair works, but a complete restoration never really happened. Then, in 2021, a much larger restoration project worth around €9 million was announced. Some work was carried out, but the area was never fully brought back to life. Today, what was once a place for people to walk, swim, fish and enjoy the ocean feels almost forgotten. And that’s a shame, because the location has incredible potential and beautiful views of the coastline. What do you think — should this hidden corner of Santa Cruz be brought back to life? ___________ 🗺️ Madeira is full of hidden places, unusual stories and spots most visitors never hear about. I’ve been living on the island for over 4 years, constantly exploring and discovering new places. I share many of these discoveries in my INTERACTIVE MADEIRA GUIDE, along with the island’s best hikes, viewpoints, restaurants and experiences. 🔗 Check the link in my bio to discover more #Madeira #MadeiraIsland #MadeiraPortugal #TravelApp #TravelMap
