@pasharegisteredmidwife: 1. “Sleeping on your back causes the cord to wrap around the baby’s neck.” ❌ A nuchal cord is not caused by the mother’s sleeping position. 2. “Raising your arms above your head makes the cord wrap around the baby’s neck.” ❌ Stretching, reaching, or lifting your arms does not cause a nuchal cord. 3. “If you turn around in bed, the cord will twist around the baby.” ❌ Normal movements and changing positions do not cause this. 4. “Having sex during pregnancy causes nuchal cord.” ❌ Sexual activity does not make the umbilical cord wrap around the baby’s neck. 5. “Eating certain foods causes the cord to wrap around the baby.” ❌ There is no evidence that particular foods cause nuchal cord. 6. “A nuchal cord means the baby will definitely suffocate.” ❌ The baby receives oxygen through the placenta and umbilical cord—not by breathing through the nose or mouth. Many nuchal cords do not cause complications. 7. “Once the cord is around the neck, it can never come off.” ❌ The cord can move as the baby moves, and it may even become wrapped and unwrapped during pregnancy. 8. “A nuchal cord always means a C-section is necessary.” ❌ Not necessarily. Many babies with a nuchal cord are born vaginally.
