Islam Makhachev’s journey has always been closely connected to Khabib Nurmagomedov. Khabib was not only his teammate and mentor, but also one of the main people who helped shape Islam into the fighter he is today. Their story represents more than just two champions — it represents the evolution of a fighting style, a mindset, and a legacy from Dagestan. Khabib retired from MMA with a perfect 29-0 record, leaving the sport as one of the most dominant fighters in UFC history. After his retirement, Islam gradually stepped into the spotlight and continued the legacy of their team. He became UFC Lightweight Champion, defended the title multiple times, and eventually moved up to welterweight to challenge himself against bigger opponents. The fight against Ian Machado Garry at UFC 330 was another major chapter in that evolution. Garry had a significant height and reach advantage, making the matchup a very different challenge for Islam. However, Islam showed that his game was no longer based only on traditional Dagestani wrestling. He combined his grappling with improved striking, patience, timing, and the ability to adapt over five rounds. He even dropped Garry with a head kick before controlling the fight with his wrestling. After five hard-fought rounds, Islam won by unanimous decision and improved his professional record to 29-1, matching Khabib’s famous 29 victories while keeping his only loss far behind him in his career. More importantly, the victory gave Islam 17 consecutive UFC wins, setting a new UFC record and further strengthening his argument as one of the greatest fighters of his generation. But the evolution of Islam is not simply about statistics. Early in his career, people often compared him to Khabib because of their similar wrestling-heavy style. Today, Islam has developed his own identity. His striking has become a much bigger part of his game, and even UFC analysts have highlighted how much his stand-up has evolved. Khabib, meanwhile, has evolved from being the undefeated champion to becoming the mentor and the symbol of a whole generation of Dagestani fighters. His role is now less about proving himself inside the cage and more about passing his knowledge to the next generation. In many ways, Islam is the continuation of that story — but he is also creating a legacy of his own. That is what makes their journey so special. Khabib built the foundation. Islam took that foundation and evolved it. From 29-0 to 29-1, the numbers may look similar, but their paths are completely different. Khabib left the sport undefeated; Islam continues to push forward, taking on bigger challenges and proving that the next generation can surpass even the standards set by its greatest teacher. And after the Ian Garry fight, one thing is becoming increasingly clear: Islam Makhachev is no longer simply Khabib’s successor. He is becoming his own legend. #UFC #mma #islammakhachev #khabib_nurmagomedov #fyp
