Because it tells Claude what not to do. Rules like: don't touch code you weren't asked to touch, don't make silent assumptions when you're confused, don't invent libraries that don't exist. One thing worth getting right. Andrej Karpathy didn't write this and hasn't endorsed it. A developer named Forrest Chang did. Karpathy named the problems in a post, Chang built the file that fixes them. You drop it into your project and it becomes part of Claude's context in every session after that. And a warning nobody gives you: security researchers have found tampered versions of these instruction files that can leak your API keys. So only get it from the official source.
