Nine-year-old Rhuan Maycon da Silva Castro was born in Rio Branco, Acre, and was the son of Rosana Auri da Silva Cândido and Maycon Douglas Lima de Castro. After their separation, custody of Rhuan was being disputed in court, and the father obtained a favorable ruling. However, before the boy could be returned to his father, Rosana fled Acre with her partner, Kacyla Priscyla Santiago Damasceno, taking Rhuan with her while the custody process was still ongoing. Since then, the boy's father and grandfather have searched for him in various states, trying to find him without effective assistance from the authorities. The two women lived with Rhuan and Kacyla's daughter in different cities in the North, Sergipe, and Goiás, frequently moving to avoid being located by the authorities and the paternal family. Sometime in 2017, Rosana mut!l@t€d her son, sEvEr!ng his penis with a kn!f€ in a rudimentary, homemade procedure without anesthesia. The justification she gave was that the boy “wanted to be a girl,” something completely refuted by the investigations. To prevent the mutilation from being discovered, Rosana interrupted all medical care for Rhuan for more than a year. The Child Protective Services and reports from the Civil Police indicated that both Rhuan and Kacyla's daughter lived in a state of confinement, with neglect, isolation, lack of adequate food, and extreme restriction of contact with the outside world. In later testimonies, Rosana stated that she had a deep fixation and resentment towards her ex-husband, and that all the masculine characteristics of her own son bothered her because they “reminded him of his father.” This rejection was mixed with delusions, religious fanaticism, and the belief of both women that they received “divine revelations.” Investigations concluded that, in Rosana's distorted mind, mutilating Rhuan and attempting to transform him into a girl was part of a delusional behavior linked to hatred of masculinity and an attempt to erase the emotional past she associated with her ex-husband. Forensic studies cited in the case also indicated that Rhuan suffered constant abuse and lived in an environment of psychological terror. The family moved to Samambaia, in the Federal District, two months before the crime. Between the late evening of May 31 and the early morning of June 1, 2019, Rosana att@ck€d Rhuan while he slept, delivering the first stab wound to his chest. According to the autopsy report, eleven more stab wounds were inflicted while the child was awake, kneeling beside the bed.
