About 22 minutes into the flight, as the aircraft was cruising peacefully at 31,000 feet over the Sinai Peninsula, it suddenly vanished from radar screens. The investigation revealed a terrifying act of terrorism: a small, homemade bomb hidden inside a soda can had been smuggled into the plane's rear cargo hold by an airport worker affiliated with ISIS. The explosion instantly caused a massive structural failure, completely severing the tail section from the rest of the aircraft. The paralyzed airliner violently broke apart in mid-air, plummeting to the desert floor and killing all 224 passengers and crew on board. As the deadliest aviation disaster in Russian history, the tragedy exposed severe, catastrophic security lapses at the departing airport.
