I am just going to be outright here and debunk a myth about public education. This system has no interest in developing critical thinkers, emotionally regulated children, or preserving good mental health. I totally agree that these are important conversations and education to have in the middle school years but I also know that a few things won't happen. Liberal and Conservative governments will never allow it into the curriculum because it doesn't serve them. But also, many teachers themselves have been conditioned to think that ELA and math are the only things that matter and to focus on anything outside of that, even the betterment of students general well-being, is frivolous. And just to add insult to injury, if the line of questioning led to students reckoning with any beliefs that have been cultivated through family expectations and upbringing, parents will be tearing down doors to blame someone for it, because despite what parents say, they don't prioritize their child's general well-being if it means they may question their religious beliefs or societal norms. We can't even invite and Indigenous elder into our school without being accused of trying to shoves 'their' religion down kids' throats. I know that in the news and on social media there is a lot of talk about how teachers are leaving because of the kids but I can't deal with all the adults involved. Just my two cents.

I’m a teacher and I can envision a school doing this and in fact I think it’s a great idea. The obstacle to this is too much testing and more and more schools having kids read short passages instead of whole books (where you get a range of emotions and experiences).
