Its story mostly begins with tiny marine organisms, algae, and plankton that lived millions of years ago. 🌊 After they died, some of their organic remains were buried beneath sediment in oxygen-poor environments. As more layers accumulated, increasing heat and pressure transformed the organic material into hydrocarbons over millions of years. Under the right conditions, these hydrocarbons became crude oil and natural gas, migrated through porous rock, and sometimes accumulated beneath impermeable rock layers—creating reservoirs we can drill into today. And once we burn these fuels, Earth cannot replace them on a human timescale. What took millions of years to form can be consumed incredibly quickly.
