@schyler.reighn: Fushimi Inari used to be my favorite shrine but between the number of tourists (this was filmed at 7/8 a.m. btw and it was already full of people) and the fatigue the staff and security seem to have toward foreigners, I don't need to go back anytime soon lol If you're a tourist Kyoto is probably the worst of Japan's three major prefectures to visit right now 🤪 Tokyo is the fun town and Osaka is full of friendly people, but since Kyoto is mainly known for its shrines and temples, the locals tend to have very little patience with tourists lol Kyoto is still nice to visit if you get outside the main tourist areas (go to Kayabuki no Sato!) but tbh Japan has so many interesting prefectures to explore that I'd recommend almost any of them over Kyoto right now 🤪 . tags . #japantravel #traveljapan #livinginjapan #lifeinjapan #travelkyoto #kyototravel #japanlifestyle #kyoto Living in Japan Osaka community Japanese lifestyle

As a white person who’s hoping to visit Japan for a couple weeks in the next year or two. What things can I do to not be a typical pain in the ass? I’ve wanted to visit Japan since I was a child and I fear going no there due to all the rude tourists in the past

80% of the tourists to Kyoto are domestic tourists. You could close the borders completely and the city would still have this problem

Cape Cod here. I get it. I also get it when people move here and act like they're better than the tourists.

Don’t they see you as a foreigner too? I’ve found that anyone not fitting in visually is instantly labelled as foreigner/tourist. This can be horrible esp if you are half Japanese or moved there from abroad 🥲

I’m sorry but I don’t care if people have been ignorant of rules before it doesn’t give staff an excuse to be rude lol people who work at zoos, amusement parks, etc get overloaded and still have to remain polite and cordial

I've an interest in visiting Sapporo or Okinawa for a while. Looks like that's been put to the curb and stomped to oblivion. Oh well.

Meanwhile smaller Japanese prefectures; suffering poverty, total lack of interest even from the other Japanese tourists. And their arts/crafts/services (passed through generations) are turning into dust, as the older locals have no one to take care of it after they pass.

y'all realize 80% of the tourism in this area is domestic tourism right? meaning it's other Japanese people, from the city

i lived in Salem, MA for quite some time and completely understand their frustration. Salem is a normal city for most of the year, but in October the tourists arrive and the entire city becomes overrun. Half the streets get shut down to foot traffic only, and we would get so many people that treat the city like an amusement park and not a place that people actually live. I had several tourists who werent paying attention bump into me and knock me down into the street before, and several of them were so rude they didnt even apologize. Plus service workers in Salem end up being exhausted - most work 12-14 hours a day just to keep up with the crowds. It does bring a lot of money that the city relies on, but not without significant cost!

I've talked to some people from Japan and they said they would love it if people visited some of the smaller places as well so those places can benefit economically while also reducing overtourism in other areas!

i wish tourists would be more respectful. Ive had a interest in Japan and it's culture since middle school and it's my dream to go, but I feel like all the rude tourists who go ruin it for the people genuinely interested in Japan, it's culture and it's history

I don’t understand how people can go to such a a beautiful sacred place and not act with respect. Even if you don’t believe in the religion, that doesn’t mean you can just be loud and rude! I’m not Christian but when I go into cathedrals to admire the sheer beauty and calm I always act with respect and reverence appropriate for the space.
