Blood banker here, O type in general is the universal donor as he has stated. The RH factor (aka + or =) is important when it comes to making what’s called Anti-D. In a trauma situation, we give O+ units to patients because of the lack of availability of O neg units. We reserve those for babies and women below the age of 55. You can be given something called Rhogam which coats your cells and prevents that reaction. It’s not fatal at first but can be an issue later on if you need a transfusion later in life.
