@mothershipsg: A domestic helper in Singapore was sentenced to eight weeks' jail after a confrontation with her 94-year-old employer left him with a head injury. She had been hired to care for her employer who was physically frail and vulnerable. The prosecution argued that she should have known the risks of acting rashly around him. She pleaded guilty on Aug. 14 to 1 charge of causing hurt, and apologised in court for not taking good care of him. #mothershipnews
To be fair, it's not entirely unreasonable for the old man to ask for food at 11pm. People do get hungry at night and we call that supper. But the fact that he raised his cane at her make me think that he is fashionably demanding and this is likely not the first time that he showed aggression towards the helper. I'm inclined to think that the old man is hard to serve and harder to please.

caregiving should be a team work between the helper and the family.but most families i know in sg treat ppl they paid like slaves.what she did was definitely wrong.she should be jailed but u dont pay ppl to take care of your parents wfout u having to input as well.come on now u paid measely and then some no actual rest time for them. and my question is if u love ur parents so much, isnt it ur responsibility to join in the care too? ease off stressing loads for both parties.

Need to be extremely patient with old folks especially those with dementia. They seem very threatening when they raise their walking stick. Caretaker burn out is real. The feeling of helplessness is also real. Homeowners should let maids know the severity of the needs of the elderly before signing contract.

Is she a maid or a slave, at that time both people should be resting. She didn't react well but he should have left her alone

so she got mad bc he wanted her to do her job? it's literally just cooking a meal, even if he just ate, why does that matter? I was going to bring up the example of helpers who need to take care of elderly that defecate and vomit everywhere, and that's more troublesome, but it's still part of their job scope...

2 months isn’t enough, should’ve been a year. Elderly people can easily 💀 from falling down especially head first

sometimes it can be a little frustrating, yes. But if ur specifically hired to take care of him, you shouldve known to be patient in advance

Caregiver is 24/7 365/366 non negotiable, 8 weeks jail is a joke, why our law so lenient to maid? a 94 yo injury is life and death!

I take the middle ground in this kind of matter and situation. If there is a very very super old and cranky member in the family I will expect a maid who is very understanding and humane and places the elderly needs as the top priority in the house and in return I won't expect the helper to do gruelling housework and wake up on time to work the whole day and night without letting the guard down the entire time. That is probably why I get a helper to begin with anyway if there is someone that old at home and housework won't be my concern anymore at all. I think this is fairer to everyone like that.

8 weeks jail for a moment of folly and anger. but 12 months jail for a deliberate set off fire onto another human. 😳

No excuse. She lost her cool. Demanding food at 10:40pm does not give her any rights to use violence.

If the children cannot take good care of their own parents then wanted to hire a boss home to look after then don’t complain too much. If doesn’t mean you pay money to hire someone, the person must treat your parents like theirs. Right? 😳🤔
