@diokaminaris: For over 1500 years, Paros has honoured the Dormition of the Theotokos 🇬🇷 The church of Panagia Ekatontapyliani is located in Parikia, the capital of the island of Paros, a short distance from its port. It is one of the oldest and best preserved Christian churches found on free Greek soil. There are two names for this church: “Katapoliani” and “Ekatontapyliani”. Until a few years ago, the prevailing opinion was that the real name of the church was the first, because it was located “towards the city”, that is, towards the ancient city, and that the second was a creation of 17th-century scholars, who wanted to give the church more grandeur. However, more recent research into the sources has shown that both of these names are contemporary and have been in parallel use since the mid-16th century. The name Katapoliani is first mentioned in a memorandum about Naxos and Paros by the Duke of the Archipelagos John IV, dated 1562, while the second, “Ekatontapyliani”, is mentioned in a document of Patriarch Theoliptos II dated 1586. Today the official name of the church is Ekatontapyliani. The tradition that has survived to this day regarding the name Ekatontapyliani is as follows: “Katapoliani has ninety-nine visible doors.
