I’ll go first. Text me when you get home. Four words I have said to every female friend I have ever had after every night out we have ever shared. Four words that are so automatic, so completely normalised, that I did not question them for decades. Not once did I text a male friend asking him to let me know he got home safely. Not once did a male friend text me. Because he was not thinking about it. He never had to. The list of things girls are taught before they are old enough to understand why is extraordinary when you write it all down. Hold your keys between your fingers. Text when you get home. Don’t walk alone at night. Don’t wear headphones in both ears. Check the back seat before you get in the car. Let someone know where you are going. Don’t leave your drink unattended. Park under a light. Don’t get too drunk. Don’t wear that. Don’t go there. Don’t trust him. Don’t be alone with him. Don’t make him angry. We absorb all of it before we are teenagers. We carry all of it forever. And the boys sitting next to us in class were taught none of it. Not because they are safer. Because we decided the solution to male violence was to teach women to avoid it rather than teaching men not to commit it. We are still making that choice. Every time we teach our daughters to hold their keys and not our sons to examine their behaviour, we are making it again. Your turn. What were you taught?
