as much as i try to understand addiction, you have to put yourself in the shoes of the family members or loved ones of an addict. as one of them myself, its so hard to not resent the addicted person after years of disappointment.

Sometimes even the own person doesn’t even see it as an addiction. Sometimes the person feels it as a control over their own life in a way.

I hated my father. I couldnt understand why he would choose drugs over me. then I was 26, higher than the Gods and I understood in that moment... id probably do anything to escape this fucked up world to.. for a moment. im proud of myself for not doing that drug again.. but I understood. if nothing else, in that moment I understood my father, I understood everything and I felt sorry for him.

my parents were both addicted to opioids. my dad has schizophrenia and my mom was being abused by my grandmother and was suicidal. and i suspect she had bpd. i understand why they took the drugs. they just wanted an escape.

As an addict, I find it hard myself to even view it as a disease. I just feel an endless amount of guilt for being an addict and hurting people. Yet I can look at any other addict and genuinely feel like it isn’t their fault and they have a disease. I just can’t give myself the same. Idk why

people saying addicts are selfish will NEVER EVER understand what they are going through. as a recovering addict, those drugs were the only thing keeping me alive, and yet everyone thinks i’m selfish for trying to stay alive?

addiction is heartbreaking because you see someone dig themselves into a hole and even if they do make it out they have to live in fear that they’ll fall back in again. not to mention the shame and embarrassment you have to work through because of doing that to yourself and hurting those around you.

as a family member of an addict. As an addict myself. I get both sides but you have to come to terms of you are hurting people you LOVE. you need to save yourself first. You always come first but don’t drag others down in recovery or during active addiction. I’ve experienced being torn down and tearing others down. u can either suffer and do nothing. Or suffer and get the fck up and out of it.
