I theorise that the adult arc could be setting up a full-circle romance between Kihyun and Do Young. The mysterious incident when they were 18 may have started with Kihyun seeking Do Young out after she told him she wouldn’t appear before him anymore, but that he could call her whenever he needed her. Since they were both dealing with unrequited love and had become mirrors of each other, I could see them having a vulnerable conversation that led to them getting close, possibly even kissing. If that happened, it would have left Kihyun confused and guilty because he still believed he loved Gaon. As adults, I imagine Do Young has shut herself off from romance and focused entirely on her career, becoming successful and independent while being completely oblivious to the men interested in her. Meanwhile, Kihyun is unemployed and interviewing, almost completely reversing their younger positions. That’s why I wonder if the interview is setting up their reunion. He says he has no time to dwell on the past because of his interview the next day, only for the story to remind us of Do Young and their unresolved history. After reuniting, I think Kihyun would initially be irritated, then become curious about how much she’s changed, and eventually jealous when other men show interest in her. He could slowly start finding excuses to see her and rely on her again before realising, “Maybe I loved her back then too.” Gaon returning could complete that arc. She already noticed that Kihyun seemed more comfortable with Do Young, so I can imagine her seeing them together as adults and saying, “I always knew it was going to be you two.” Kihyun spent years scapegoating Do Young for his pain, but she was actually the one who exposed his toxic behaviour and loved him selflessly enough to let him go for his own happiness. Eventually, he may realise that her love was never fake or superficial and begin yearning for it. This time, though, he could choose to build a genuine friendship with her and love her selflessly, without forcing his feelings onto her like he did with Gaon. That would make their romance feel like a true full-circle redemption for both of them.
