@interestingengineering: Carbon Robotics' LaserWeeder G2 uses cameras, AI and high-powered diode lasers to spot weeds and burn them out without touching the crop or the soil. The 20-foot model shoots more than 8,000 weeds a minute with sub-millimetre accuracy and kills up to 99 percent of what it targets. It is now running on over 100 farms across 15 countries.
Those protesting against AI data centers are protesting this.

Just for the record, the Chinese government has invested billions of dollars in AI for smart agriculture and made the technologies available to farmers at heavily subsidized costs. They started this program in 2023, and are halfway through the planned deployment (2024-2028). Just sayin’, capitalism isn’t necessarily the right approach for things like domestic food supply.
