they dump fuel so they can safely land the aircraft, without putting immense pressure on the landing gear and nose due to the heavy weight. it’s either dump the weight and have a safe landing or risk the safety for some fuel 💔

Weil die Maschine wegen des extremen Gewichts für den Langstreckenflug viel zu schwer für eine sofortige Sicherheitslandung war, kreiste die Crew rund zwei Stunden lang über Bayern. Sie ließ dabei die ca. 60 Tonnen Treibstoff über den dafür vorgesehenen Bereichen (Fuel Dumping Areas) ab, um das maximale Landegewicht nicht zu überschreiten und das beschädigte Fahrwerk zu entlasten. Sagt Süddeutsch Zeitung.
