$Chosen Smith was murdered on February 17, 2018. Chosen had been in the care of two babysitters named Tameke Wright and Lavar Harris. On February 17, 2018, Wright and Harris rushed Chosen to the hospital after telling police that he had fallen off a futon. Wright said she saw Chosen standing in front of the futon with lumps on his forehead and he appeared to be staring into space. Shortly after Chosen was taken to the hospital, he was pronounced dead. An autopsy found the back part of his skull had been fractured and he'd sustained a subdural hematoma, a head injury strong enough to burst blood vessels. There were also bruises and scratches of all sizes covering his body. The state Medical Examiner's Office listed the cause of death as blunt force trauma. Harris and Wright were charged with first-degree murder by abuse or neglect. The court documents detailed several assaults in February, including one in which Wright told police that she saw Harris pick up Chosen by an arm. Later that night, when Wright told police she questioned Harris why Chosen was wet, Harris told her he'd placed him in a cold shower for 10-15 minutes "to keep him awake." Harris also pulled down Chosen's diaper and began hitting him with a belt and a remote control. On another occasion, Harris told Wright that Chosen no longer cried when he was hit. Wright then told him that Chosen needed to be hit in the back of the head. "See I told you so," Wright said, after Harris followed her instructions and Chosen cried. In January 2019, Wright and Harris pleaded guilty to first-degree murder by abuse. A Superior Court judge sentenced them each to 35 years in prison, followed by 6 months of either home confinement or work release, then 18 months of probation. Their sentence also requires them to spend every February 17th, the anniversary of Chosen's death, in solitary confinement.
