because they have their own agent? composer. they have a bunch of training data on really coding users. and it has large scale developer usage.

Bc with cursoe you get way more usuage then paying individually to each lab. Also since they merged you also get grok 4.6 with a lot of usage and it’s pretty good

tab completions, their composer agent is quite good, and they have ASSLOADS of data that xai wanted. arguably, that acquisition is the only reason from 4.6 isn't total ass. keep in mind, most acquisitions of startups have little to do with the underlying tech and much more about inheriting a dataset or customer base

The integration/harness is a lot better integrated than using the codex/claude extension or cli w vscode. It also comes w a router for using multiple models. I’ve also found it works better over ssh than the extension

It is not just the IDE, it is the unified subscription model

It produces training data sets of highly specific engineering tasks on the backend for xAI to make better coding models. That data is valuable

honestly I had the same thought today. especially if you use copilot with vs code. cursor overall looks like a nicer ide but I also don't know what more it does, even if I use both daily

Neither Cursor nor VS Code is needed if you have Codex and/or Claude desktop. I used Cursor for a long time and found it to do nothing but create decent code that it would then later totally fuck up beyond salvation.
