I can’t handle figurative language: personification (“the data stays silent”), physical-gesture idioms (“put your finger on”, “reach for”), game and combat framing (“leverage”, “same moves”, “on the table”), things that “land”, “hold”, “stick”, or “sit on top of”, “load-bearing”, “the dial”. I also hate all the hedging: “actually” and “not X, but y”. It always assumes my reader, won’t believe me and requires convincing.

Man, the performative correctio (or performative epanorthosis) was driving me *so* crazy! I had to build a whole prompt to ban it at the generation stage and then a snippet for an occasional refresher. I also started noticing “quietly” sneaking in everywhere: “Avoid ‘quietly’ as a dramatic, epistemic, or existential intensifier…” You really can't lessen your vigilance, if I’m not *at least * reading generated text, I can't spot the slop patterns.

Look for Ruben’s 100 questions to build your brand voice. It has helped cut down on editing. But I need to take that and diversify it for different contexts.

we're also battling all kinds of Americanisations here in the UK. have you ever tried pointing it at language corpus? it's definitely defaulting to the patterns it's well familiar with and is addressing all issues raised indirectly, avoiding confrontation, overconnecting and over explaining concepts. finally, it's struggling with burstiness typical of people. there's lots more to it and it'll definitely get better at it very soon. both got and Claude voice chats have progressed miles over the past few months.

three's a wikipedia page that lists everything that AI uses. I used that to tell it how not to write and ask Claude to check it weekly so it's kept up to date.

I fed Claude code exports of all of my Reddit and Twitter posts, then had it write a skill for me. It worked surprisingly well. Like, I gave it a recent news story and told it to write a comment as me, and both the language as well as the arguments / observations about the news story were very much on point.

LLMs are prediction models at their core. Saying what not to do is not predictive of what to do. It requires higher level reasoning to come up with alternatives. Instead just provide a few examples of the style you want.

I made the mistake of recently having Fable try to rewrite my portfolio copy and it did an atrocious job. That was a very expensive prompt. I thought that it could naturally write better. I was very wrong.
