@iamgertrudejordan: Whew! This is a sensitive topic in the dementia community. It hits different when the person you’re caring for is your spouse. I can’t even begin to imagine the pain, frustration, and anger when the person you’ve made a vow to doesn’t know you, threatens you because they believe you’re not their spouse, or doesn’t respond to you in a way a spouse should. Dementia changes the brain, and in turn, how people process information. It’s not your job to convince them that you are their spouse, but it is your job to meet them when they are! You want to make sure that you’re validating them, focusing on how you care for them, and being intentional about the moment. I know it’s hard, especially when they say they don’t recognize who you are, but I want you to remember that your covenant matters, the vows you made matter, and the act of love as you serve them always matters because nothing that you’re doing is wasted. 1 Corinthians 13:8!
