Before today’s billionaires, there was Mansa Musa, ruler of the Mali Empire and one of the most famously wealthy people in recorded history. In 1324, Musa began his legendary pilgrimage to Mecca. According to medieval accounts, his enormous procession included thousands of attendants and soldiers, along with camels carrying extraordinary quantities of gold. And Musa spent lavishly. During his journey through Cairo, he distributed and spent so much gold that contemporary chroniclers reported its value fell significantly in Egypt. Years later, the effects of his visit were apparently still remembered. But Mansa Musa’s legacy was bigger than gold. Under his rule, the Mali Empire controlled important West African trade routes and territories rich in gold. Cities such as Timbuktu developed into major centers of commerce and Islamic scholarship. His fame spread so widely that the famous Catalan Atlas of 1375 depicted Musa sitting on a throne in West Africa, holding a golden object in his hand. Nearly 700 years later, historians still can’t meaningfully calculate his fortune using modern dollars. Mansa Musa wasn’t simply a rich African king. He ruled one of the great powers of the medieval world. #MansaMusa #MaliEmpire #AfricanHistory #WestAfricanHistory #learnhistoryontiktok
