Both sides are important. The left is progressive and the right is conservative. The left is more willing to change laws, institutions, and social norms. The right is more inclined to preserve tradition, individual responsibility, and be more cautious about rapid change. The tension between both creates a balance. Basically the left is the accelerator and the right is the brakes. If we only had a single party the drive for change that is necessary with growth would be severely slowed down. Everyone should essentially be a swing voter.

Identity politics would be “Republican or Democrat” asking if your right or left is a spectrum. It just means where your beliefs fall on that spectrum. So you could answer “probably 60% leaning right” or “80% leaning left”.
