I'm actually quite surprised that there isn't even recognition that you're speaking Irish, at least in New Zealand people can tell you're speaking Te Reo Maori if they don't understand it

This hurts my heart tbh. I'm Native American living in the middle east. I learned Arabic. I learned enough of my native language to understand, even if I can't reply completely. Ireland needs to make Irish their official public schools language, and foreign languages like English as the elective. That's what normal countries do- they put their language as the requirement and any other is an elective. You're blessed that you still have your country, unlike us. Your people can control their decolonization.
