Professor Brian Greene has spent decades trying to understand the true nature of our universe and he says the argument that we could be living inside one actually holds up. Brian is a theoretical physicist at Columbia University and one of the world’s best-known thinkers on string theory, space, time and the fundamental nature of reality. By 12 years old, Brian had already exhausted the maths curriculum at his high school. He has now spent decades trying to answer a question that sounds simple but might be the biggest question we can ask: Why are we here? Brian has the ability to take ideas that should feel completely inaccessible and make you feel like you can actually understand them. A tiny moment where conscious beings are actually here to look around, fall in love, build things and understand the world they’re standing in. Because eventually, the stars will burn out. Matter (atoms, planets) will begin to disappear. Even black holes are predicted to evaporate into nothing. On paper, it sounds bleak. But listening to him, I felt the exact opposite.
