@rippleconnections: Defensiveness gets talked about like a character flaw. It's closer to a reflex, and the useful thing about reflexes is that they can be interrupted once you can see them coming. Gottman's lab named defensiveness as one of the four behaviors that most reliably predict a relationship going badly, alongside criticism, contempt and stonewalling. The finding underneath it is the one worth knowing: defending yourself doesn't read as self-protection to the person across from you, it reads as a counterattack, so it escalates a conversation that was still recoverable a sentence earlier. The same lab found that the outcome of a fifteen-minute conflict conversation can be predicted with striking accuracy from the first three minutes alone. Almost everything that determines how it goes has already happened before either of you thinks the argument has properly started. Which is why these five swaps matter more than any repair you attempt later. The mechanism in all of them is the same, and it's smaller than people expect: you accept some part of it, not the whole accusation and not a version of events you don't agree with, just one true piece. Taking responsibility for a fraction is what the research identifies as the antidote, because it ends the contest over who is right and returns you both to the actual problem. The last one is worth its own note. Going flat and saying "fine" is usually flooding rather than indifference, and a body past about a hundred beats a minute can't do this conversation. Naming that out loud is the difference between a break and a wall. Save this one where you'll find it mid-argument, which is the only time it's any use 🩵 Keywords: defensiveness in relationships, four horsemen, Gottman, how to stop arguing, taking responsibility, conflict repair, stonewalling, what to say instead, couples communication scripts

The word “clearly” in #4 depending on tone, in an argument can come off passive aggressive ~ it’s a small word change, but I think it would make a difference

this is definitely more evidence that being a patient, empathetic person is less of a personality trait and more of a language that you learn. I wonder what this viewpoint says about me? 🤔
