Here is yet another example of how the Quran twists the Scriptures: Jesus’ followers get called “helpers,” using a word rooted in a much later context. Surah 3:52, 61:14: Jesus’ disciples are called “al-hawariyyun,” and they declare, “We are the helpers (ansar) of Allah”, the same word (ansar) that becomes the title for Muhammad’s Medinan supporters. The framing casts Jesus’ disciples in the mold of a 7th-century Arabian movement, declaring themselves “helpers of Allah” and submitting as “Muslims” (3:52: “bear witness that we are Muslims”). But the historical disciples were 1st-century Galilean Jews. They didn’t call themselves ansar or announce they were “Muslims.” Their confession was specific and different: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Matthew 16:16. “My Lord and my God!” John 20:28. The Quran retrojects a 7th-century identity onto 1st-century men. (This is subtler than a date-error, it’s an anachronism of category, painting the disciples in the colors of a much later movement.) The Gospels preserve who they actually were: Jewish fishermen and tax collectors who watched Jesus die and rise, and went to their own deaths insisting they’d seen Him alive. They didn’t say “we are helpers of God.” They said “we are witnesses”, “we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard.” Acts 4:20. Witnesses to a resurrection. That’s what turned cowards into martyrs.
