@chemistry_icon: 🔥 FLAME TEST — PRINCIPLE & REASON 🔬 Principle When a metal salt is heated in a flame, the electrons of the metal atom/ion absorb energy and move from a lower energy level to a higher energy level (excited state). When these electrons return to their lower energy levels, they release the absorbed energy as light. 🌈 Why do different elements give different flame colours? Every element has a unique arrangement of energy levels. Therefore, the energy difference between its electron levels is different. The emitted light consequently has a specific wavelength (or range of wavelengths). 👉 Different wavelength → different colour of flame ⚡ In simple words: Heat → Electron gets excited → Electron returns → Energy released as light → Characteristic flame colour 📌 Important: The flame colour is mainly due to the metal ion, not the entire salt. This characteristic emission can be used to help identify certain metal ions. #FlameTest #Chemistry #ChemistryNotes #AtomicStructure #Electron
