the gods eat the apples because they dont have inherent immortality, giants dont need them because they are made of things that dont die like a person like earth and fire and ice

Everyone in the comments trying desperately to rationalize it when it’s clear that ancient myths are merely oral tradition forged by the mouths of many so there are bound to be discrepancies as a result. Even the better attested Greek beliefs had endless variation. Heck, the Christian gospels are themselves a contradictory mess. This is just the nature of myth. They are not univocal.

It's heavily implied that Iðunn is loved by all and as such literally yes she is so courteous and friends with them all and she just gives them freely. Very very heavily implied but never actually confirmed as far as I know.

The Aesir and Vanir Gods are not inherently immortal. Juton on the other hand, are. Now simple breakdown. Aesir-Order Gods representations of society. Vanir-Nature gods representations of old life (hunters gathers farming). Juton-Forces of nature. Now where it gets really complicated most of them are mixed blood.

Also how were the gods immortal before Idun existed? Isn’t she one of the younger gods

OK for Loki I think it's like a delivery system where they give him an apple every few thousand years or so so this way he can live without his sentence for the others I have no idea

I think the giants and their kin don’t age the way people do. They each represent primordial omnipresent forces and are more like natural disasters than representations of people. The gods represent the works of man and mans fallibility so they have to take measures against weakening with age because that is the way of man. Lokis children meanwhile are omens of the end and only get stronger the closer they get to their promised day no matter what anyone tries to stop it

I'm curious how long one of her apples lasts before the person needs another? Second, does this depend on the realm? So for instance can the Jotunar go longer than the Aesir without one or is it the same passage of time for both? 🤔

when there's only one person that knows how to grow the fruit that makes you immortal. you don't question who she gives the fruit to you. just be happy she keeps growing it

I am unsure but is Odin described as already being old? So he got the apples much later in his life, so its mostly just keeping him alive in his old age
