I definitely understand where you're coming from, but I think “doctors don’t get kickbacks for prescriptions” is much too broad a claim. Purdue Pharma and the opioid epidemic are probably the most obvious example, but there are others. Insys literally paid physicians through sham speaker programs to encourage prescriptions of Subsys, and Novartis settled a major federal case involving speaker programs and other benefits used to influence prescribing. I’m not claiming that physicians bear equal responsibility to pharmaceutical companies. Pharmaceutical companies can be far more culpable, especially when they deliberately design systems to manipulate prescribing. My point is only that physicians still have some professional responsibility for their own decisions. So I don’t think this can simply be dismissed as saying more about the poster’s values than doctors’ values. There is a documented history of pharmaceutical companies influencing physicians, including cases involving actual illegal kickbacks, and sometimes physicians participated in that rather than merely being passive victims of it.

I feel like people don’t understand that the opioid epidemic made this illegal…. Yes that’s a great example of corruption but that’s why it’s illegal now and has been for a hot minute.

I mean you can also check to see how much money/freebies your doctor gets. There’s a nationwide online database. I checked and I think the most my doctor has gotten was a single sandwich at a conference she paid to attend herself 😂

Plenty of organizations will not even see reps 💁🏻♀️I’ve worked with one or two prominent facilities that deemed it against corporate policy. But even so, a pizza lunch or Starbucks breakfast hardly constitutes a kickback. Especially when you consider what reps used to do..

My reps are … not cute. We take starbies to get samples and then keep prescribing off the $4 list. I have Medicare and Medicaid patients.

I love that in Oregon they have an online list of everything pharmacy reps give or provide doctors and their offices. and most doctors dont receive much, pretty much lunch in the form of sandwiches or boxes of donuts for the office to share

It’s best to advocate for yourself as a patient and ask a lot of questions. Some are in too much debt and do bad things for side cash. My old family doctor is currently in jail for said reason. Wasn’t a hot rep it was bags of cash. I’m sure it’s rare but maybe Jake had a bad experience

people think the Drs here are paid to make us get our kids vaccinated or to give out specific medications. we dont pay for vaccinations. you don't even pay for the appointment to get the vaccinations and most of us have our medications covered under UHC. I'm not sure how they think drs are benefiting here 😅
